Run. Plunge. Play. Repeat.

What is it? The Polar Plunge® Winter Festival, Feb. 7-8, 2014, is Special Olympics Virginia’s largest fundraiser, during which individuals and teams, alongside Special Olympics athletes, take the plunge into Virginia Beach’s icy Atlantic Ocean in the height of winter! Other crowd favorites include Friday’s Cool School Challenge for middle and high school students, theFriday Night Plunge Party featuring SlapnationSaturday’s 5Ka beach volleyball tournament (new for 2014) and the Pee Wee Plunge for kids 10 and under.

Why do it? Everyone deserves a chance at a happy and purposeful life. Yet people with intellectual disabilities face doubt, barriers and low expectations. For many, Special Olympics is the only place where they find an opportunity to participate in their communities, develop belief in themselves, and feel like champions.

For every inspiring Special Olympics athlete in Virginia there are 6 more people waiting for their chance – and so many more around the world. By participating in the Polar Plunge, you’re helping us reach out to one more person who wants to participate in Special Olympics.

Don’t have what it takes? Find a team and volunteer to be their defroster (aka towel holder), sand crab (you’re ready to raise money but you’d rather keep your toes in the sand) or cheerleader. Or just come watch! The Polar Plunge® Winter Festival is open to the public and also features musical entertainment, food, the Boogie Down the Boardwalk Costume Parade, ice sculptures by Ice Art Inc., a gigantic sand sculpture by Team Sandtastic, vendor displays, children’s activities and more. There is no fee to view the Plunge, but a $5 donation is required to access the heated tent and festival area on the beach. For more, check out the event schedule.
