LOS ANGELES (AP) — Need to save a life? There’s now an app for that.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department has linked its dispatch system to a CPR smartphone app. The app, called PulsePoint, notifies CPR-trained citizens when someone nearby is having a heart attack.

Department officials hope a cardiac arrest victim could get CPR from a good Samaritan before medical responders arrive.

The Los Angeles Times reports the app also provides CPR instruction and the location of defibrillators.
