Perry: 'Rodgers Is Too English For Aerosmith'

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry considered hiring former Queen singer Paul Rodgers to replace Steven Tyler - but decided the rocker is too "English" to front an American band.

The musicians are looking to replace Tyler while he takes a hiatus to recover from a recent stint in rehab - insisting they want to continue with plans for a new tour and album without the frontman.

Numerous stars have since been linked to the role including Lenny Kravitz and Billy Idol.

Rodgers was also rumored to be in the running to take the coveted slot, but Perry reveals that although he is a talented singer, he wouldn't fit in with Aerosmith.

Perry tells Classic Rock magazine, "I mean, obviously that would be a thought, because he is one of my favorite singers of all time, and I got a chance to meet him at Classic Rock Awards (in London) a couple of months ago. But I think that him being English, from that earlier generation, I don't think that it would work. I mean, it's more than just somebody who can sing. We're young kids to him. I just don't think it's the right chemistry. Technically, I know he's got the chops - I mean, I know he can sing anything he wants - but I think that it's a little bit more than just if he can sing the songs."

But the guitarist admits they do have broad parameters for the search - and would even consider a female replacement for Tyler.

He adds, "Oh, definitely (we would consider a woman). No one in the band's brought that up, but sometimes you've gotta think out of the box. Oddly enough, a lot of the bands I was in before I had Aerosmith, I had female singers in the band and it was really good - a lot of great songs. So that's definitely a possibility."

Lawyers representing Tyler recently contacted Aerosmith's management threatening legal action unless the band halts auditions for a replacement singer. The matter will be discussed at a meeting of Aerosmith bosses on February 9.
