Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group Returns Home July 13th

NORFOLK, Va. – More than 6,000 Sailors from Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 8 are scheduled to arrive at their Norfolk homeport, July 13.

The aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), commanded by Capt. Ryan Scholl, and ships USS Anzio (CG 68), USS Bulkeley (DDG 84), USS Gonzalez (DDG 66), USS Gravely (DDG 107), and USNS John Lenthall (T-AO-189) are returning to Naval Station (NS) Norfolk after an eight-month deployment.

Commanded by Rear Adm. Bret Batchelder, the Harry S. Truman (HST) CSG is comprised of Truman with embarked squadrons of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 7, CSG 8 staff, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 28 staff and ships, and Anzio.  DESRON 28 ships include Bulkeley, Gonzalez, and Gravely.

The squadrons of CVW-7 embarked aboard Truman are: Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 25 “Fist of the Fleet,” VFA-83 “Rampagers,” VFA-103 “Jolly Rogers,” and VFA-143 “Pukin Dogs;” Tactical Electronics Warfare Squadron (VAQ) 140 “Patriots;” Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 117 “Wallbangers;” Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 40 “Rawhides;” Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 72 “Proud Warriors;” and Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 5 “Nightdippers.”

Lenthall supported HST CSG by providing underway replenishment of fuel, fleet cargo and stores.

While deployed, the strike group served in the 5th and 6th U.S. Fleet areas of responsibility conducting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and missions in support of Operation Inherent Resolve over Iraq and Syria.
