Classic Rock 106.9 The Fox (WAFX) and FM99 (WNOR) are celebrating the 50th anniversary of legendary rock DJ Mike Arlo.
Arlo did his first air shift on FM99 WNOR in 1975 and took over the midday time slot, where he has made his mark, in 1981. In February of 1996, Arlo moved from FM99 to sister station Classic Rock 106.9 The Fox (WAFX), bringing “Arlo’s Electric Lunch” and legions of loyal fans with him.
In the 50 years that Arlo has been on the air in Hampton Roads, he has kept the public informed through countless hurricanes and storms and has been a part of many community-oriented events. Here is partial list of events:
- FM99 Rock and Roll up Your Sleeve Blood Drive: He was at the inaugural Blood Drive in 1988, an event which continues to be the largest blood drive in the Mid-Atlantic region.
- The Fox and FM99 Mayflower Marathon Annual Food Drive: He has been an integral part of all of them. The 28th Mayflower Marathon in November of 2024 brought in over Thanksgiving 900,000 meals for the 3 local foodbanks.
- Polar Plunge for Special Olympics: Arlo has broadcast live from this huge fundraiser each year.
- Ghent Arts Festival: Arlo was at the first-ever festival in the late 1970’s, which was a benefit for the Norfolk Free Clinic. This event is still in existence and is known as the Stockley Gardens Arts Festival.
- American Heart Association: He was “Cardioman” for them in the 1980’s promoting healthy eating and exercise to children
General Manager, Carol Commander: “Mike Arlo is a legend both on and off the airwaves. He’s entertained thousands of people over the last 50 years – not just with his voice but his music knowledge and his passion for our incredible listeners – most of whom have met him at one time or another. It’s an absolute pleasure to work alongside Mike and to call this man a good friend and colleague for many of his five decades!”
Operations Manager, Mike Beck: “I’ve never known anyone as consistently positive, warm, and friendly as Mike Arlo. He is the same man on and off the air, and he makes every day a great day. Congratulations on 50 years of Arlo On Your Radio!”
