1964: A riot broke out during a The Rolling Stones’ gig at The Empress Ballroom in Blackpool, Lancashire. Keith Richards noticed a man with his hands on the stage exhorting the crowd to spit, and warned him, but the spitting continued. Richards is then reported to have stood on his hands and kicked him in the face, whereupon some of the 7,000 fans in attendance started fighting, causing over 4,000 Pounds in damage. Blackpool City Council later voted to ban The Stones from playing in the city. 44 years later, the 2008 council voted to lift the ban, but a spokesman for the group said they had no plans to return.
1977: Led Zeppelin performed their final concert in the U.S. at Alameda County Coliseum in Oakland. Rick Derringer & Judas Priest were the opening acts.
1978: The film Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band opens in America, and it tanks hard. Savaged by critics, it becomes a legendary Hollywood flop despite appearances by Peter Frampton, Billy Preston, Aerosmith and The Bee Gees.
1982: Survivor started a six week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with “Eye Of The Tiger“.
1993: U2 entered the Billboard 200 Album Chart at number one with Zooropa which was their fourth album to reach number one in the U.S. where it went on to sell two million copies.
