David was nominated by his daughter Lindsay:
My Dad, David Sypniewski, born and raised in Michigan enlisted in the United States Navy as a senior in High School, 1976. Throughout his 20 years of service he traveled many places while under deployment, missing holidays, anniversaries, birthdays, including the birth of his 1st child (by just 16 hours)! Luckily he managed to make the other 4!
He spent many months away from his wife and five kids while on deployment aboard several Navy Aircraft Carriers, including being apart of the commissioning of the USS George Washington and the decommissioning of the USS Coral Sea. He even had a short tour aboard the USNS Comfort’s unprecedented second deployment in the fall of 1994, when the Naval Hospital Ship was sent to assist Haitian immigrants.
During his time in the Navy he worked primarily in the Dental services, serving our country by making sure all others serving were well taken care of! He was stationed for several years on a Marine base in the middle of the desert in 29 Palms, CA. And moved his family cross county 4 times! After 20 loyal years to the Navy he retired in 1997, but continues to serve, just in a different way, by currently still working for the same dental lab he joined even prior to leaving the Navy. And of course he is the head and support of his amazing family. His awesome wife of 40 years, his 5 adult children, plus spouses, and his pride and joys- his 6 beautiful grandkids. These kids could not ask for a better “PeePaw!” He gives these kids the world and then some. Under his grumpy old man curmudgeon persona he is a great man who does whatever is in his power to take care of his “Polish Mafia” family (LoL) and makes sure we never go without. I’m proud to call this man my Dad and would love nothing more than for him to be honored as the Military Hero of the Week. He may not have ever served on the battle lines, but he is our hero and truly deserves this and so much more! Thank you for your time and consideration.
