Seaman Shannon Gillespie was nominated by her boyfriend Ryan, who had the following to say about her: “My girlfriend is an amazing talented person who always tries to help others before herself. She comes from a long line of veterans, and she is the first of her family, so she holds that pride strong to her heart. She got injured in the Navy and has gone through small surgeries for her foot and back to help with everyday activities. Constantly suffering with spinal pain and chronic migraines, Shannon always is out and about helping in small ways. Every active duty she goes out and gives out roses to people working fast food who couldn’t be home with their partner. While she was still in and being treated for her spine, she saw a woman crash her car outside of base! She was the only active-duty person to take action, she pulled the woman from the smoking car, treated her bleeding head wound, and waited till help arrived. She never left the elderly woman’s side till her husband came to get her hours later, cause Shannon was a corpsman and held that true to her soul, just like her now passed grandfather. My girlfriend never got recognition for her action that day and I really want her to be. She was even able to hand her grandma her grandpa’s flag at his funeral, he never got to see her in her whites, so she made sure she wore them for him! She’s amazing, funny, artistic, loyal, and the unspoken hero of my life. I love her.”
